Choosing the right celebrant is a big wedding planning decision. The person leading your wedding ceremony will play a crucial role in setting the tone and atmosphere. The best celebrants will ensure your big day gets off to the best possible start in a really meaningful and memorable way. Here are my 10 top tips to help you select the best celebrant for your wedding celebrations:

  • Experience and Expertise:
    • Search for a celebrant with plenty of experience in conducting ceremonies similar to the one you are planning. They should have a good understanding of the type of ceremony you want, whether it’s a wedding, vow renewal, or another celebration of your relationship.
  • Personal Connection:
    • It’s crucial to feel a personal connection with your celebrant. They should be someone you feel comfortable with and who understands your values and preferences. It’s a good idea to chat with a few celebrants before making a decision, to ensure the best fit.

  • Reviews:
    • Read reviews from past clients online. Feedback from others who have worked with the celebrant can provide insights into their professionalism, reliability, ability to set the right tone, and create a ceremony that’s true to the both of you.
  • Communication Skills:
    • A good celebrant should have great communication skills. They should be able to articulate your story and the sentiment that’s right for you, in a way that resonates with you and your guests. Pay attention to how they communicate during your initial contact with them. Are they warm, welcoming and friendly? Are they passionate about what they do? Are they client-focused?
  • Flexibility:
    • Your celebrant should be flexible and open to accommodating your wishes. They should be willing to tailor the ceremony to your preferences, perhaps incorporating any cultural elements that are important to you as a couple.
  • Creativity:
    • A creative celebrant can really make the difference, making your ceremony unique and special. Ask about their approach to crafting tailor made ceremonies.  Again, pay attention to their reviews. Look for comments about how personalised and bespoke their service was.
  • Availability:
    • Confirm the celebrant’s availability on your chosen date and time. Ensure they are not overbooked. Consider choosing a celebrant who only takes one ceremony a day; that way they are likely to be focused only on you two and they can dedicate the required time to prepare and perform your ceremony well. They will also be able to offer some flexibility should the ceremony need to begin a little later than originally planned. This is in stark contrast to a registrar (who will be restricted to a set time and will offer only a relatively brief ceremony, as they will usually have several ceremonies to conduct each day).
  • Cost and Contract:
    • Discuss the celebrant’s fees upfront and make sure you understand what is included. Get everything in writing, including a clear agreement that outlines the services they will provide, confirming the date of your wedding day, the venue etc.
  • Rehearsal:
    • Make sure your celebrant offers a rehearsal before the actual ceremony. A rehearsal can help iron out any logistical or timing issues and ensure you are as comfortable and as relaxed as possible ahead of the big moment.
  • Contingency plan:
    • Find out what happens if your celebrant falls ill or can’t conduct your ceremony on your wedding day. Choose a celebrant who has considered this and who has back up support in place. Consider booking a celebrant who belongs to a network of trusted professionals who can step in, if needed. I’m so pleased to say that in all the years I’ve been conducting ceremonies, I’ve never needed to ask a colleague to step in, but if I ever did, I have many trusted, professional celebrant colleagues to draw on.

Remember that your celebrant is there to help you create a ceremony that reflects your unique relationship and personal values. Take the time to choose someone who aligns with your vision and makes you feel excited, confident and at ease on your special day.
